DIALOGUE is not the same as TEXT.
I’ve been working with CEOs, Founders, Entrepreneurs, Inventors and Investors for the past 10 Years, helping them tell their stories, launch new products and most importantly… raise investment.
And one thing that pops up again and again when developing the script is the need to explain to their team – often Marketing or PR like to get involved – is that we are working with Dialogue not Text.
Furthermore I remind them how there is also a huge difference when listening instead of reading in both understanding and impact on their target audience.
Why you might ask?
Well studies have shown that the average well educated human (we are aiming for investors so we’ll assume they are readers) reads approximately 250 – 300 words per minute.
The same average human on the other hand – or shall we say other ear – can only absorb and comprehend approximately 130 – 150 spoken words in the same minute.
Why again you ask? Well it is all down to the syllables, abbreviations, numbers and well… breathing.
Don’t believe me? Then get your phone out, open the stopwatch and time yourself reading the section in red above. First in your head and then out loud.
What did you get? Me? I got 10 seconds to read it in my head and 20 seconds to read it out loud.
Now, yes you could get cheeky and try to speed through it like an auctioneer at the county fair BUT you and I know that method is not going to create proper engagement or have any chance of achieving your goals.
What will help achieve your goals is ruthlessly attacking your written text and honing your pitch down to the bare essentials. The words that remain end up being there for a reason.
The phrases will sing and the numbers will hit harder.
The overall result is that your pitch will not only be easily understood but also stay in the investor’s mind longer.
